Dream from Vargevass kennel joins the pact

Today Scream, whom we call Dream joined our team. We visited the Vargevass-kennels in Sweden to mate Inui with Pamuk - and - yes found our Dream :)

He is nice going, strong young boy, with a nice background. His dad is Finnemarka Pushkin and his mom is Nathani av Vargevass. Please see Dream’s own page for further info

Tänään meille tuli Vargevass-kennelistä mukaan komea nuori poika ‘Dream’. Se on viralliselta nimeltään Scream, mikä ei kyllä kuvaa sitä. Dream on reipas pitkäjalka, jolla on Vargevassin johtajakoirien tausta. Dreamin isä on Finnemarka Pushkin and äiti on Nathani av Vargevass. Tervetuloa joukkoon!

It was the correct time for Inui - and off to Sweden we went to meet the father-to-be Pamuk av Vargevass.

Vuoden 2020 COVID19-epdemia pysäytti lähes täysin vapaa-ajan matkailun Suomeen. Ulkomaalaisturistien puuttuminen on vaikeuttanut radikaalisti matkailuyritysten - ja koiravaljakkoyritysten toimeentuloa.

Paljon on puhuttu Lapin matkailun kärsimisestä - mutta yhtälailla asiakkaita ei ole tullut koiravaljakkoilemaan tänne Etelään, Espooseen.

Kun myynti yhtäkkiä menee lähes nollaan, ollaan vaikeiden asioiden äärellä: Koirat on ruokittava, rokotettava, treenattava ja hoidettava läpi vuoden, vaikka tuloa ei olisikaan...

Onneksi on ihania auttavia ihmisiä. - Olimme niin iloisia, kun kuulimme, että lähi-K-kauppiaat ovat lahjoittamassa useille koirvaljakkoyrityksille ruokaa, jotta koirien ei tarvitsisi kärsiä tästä.

Kävimme tänään hakemassa Kauklahden K-Marketista ison kasan hyvää Pirkka-koiranruokaa. Meidän Likta-tyttö oli mukana. Sen mielestä nuo ruokapaketit olisi voinut jo avata (vaikka joulu jo meni :)

Times are tough. But why not come and hike with our huskies? Our Arctic Husky hikes are leisurely nature walks, during which I’ll be talking about husies and the beautiful Finnish Nature. Half way we’ll stop by the fire and cook some sausages.

Inhoittaako sisälläolo ja sisällelinnoittautuminen? Arctic Husky Hikella pääsee tuulettautumaan turvallisesti ulkoilmaan ja kauniiseen Nuuksion kansallispuistoon. Jokainen saa oman huskyn talutukseen ja samalla kerromme juttuja koirista, koirakisoista ja kauniista Suomen luonnosta. Puolessa välissä pidetään tauko ja paistetaan makkaraa ja keitetään nokipannukahvit nuotiolla.

A nice 15km training run with a dog cart

Spring is advancing. Today we found a nice new training run closeby. Kati and I went with the whole team for a nice leisurely 15km dog carting ride. - And halfway had a refreshing cup of hot tea - of course :)

Tänään käytiin treenaamassa koko teamin voimalla. Semmoiset 15km mentiin hyvällä innolla ja puolessa välissä toki nautittiin termarista teetä ja juotettiin ahkeria huskyjamme.

Excellent dog sledding with 10 dogs in Metsäkartano, Rautavaara

During this weekend, we traveled all the way to Rautavaara in the Eastern part of Finland. There was nice snow and the whole team relaxed doing a couple of leisurely dog sledding rides on the frozen ice and in the nearby woods.

Nappi and Elegia were happily leading. The ride was fast and the dogs were eager...

We also met some friends, who own Vetoava Fargad ‘Lemmy’ and Vetoava Ivor ‘Mickey’. - The dogs took a nice ride in our bigger team - and as he really wanted Lemmy also tried being in the lead. He was leading amazingly well:)

Kuusamo Mid Distance Race in MD12 class: Happily made it and received REK3-qualification

Yesterday and today we took part in Mid Distance dog sledding race in Kuusamo, Finland. The distance was 2 x 42 km and we were competing in 12-dog class.

We made it and received dog sledding qualification REK3.

The city of Espoo arranged a nice outdoors day for the families of the ambassodors of foreign countries here in Finland. - Our huskies were there. There was a lot of patting and everybody had a nice time.

Tänään syntyi reipas pieni hauva erinomaisille rekikoiravanhemmille. Päivänvalon näki Vetoava Gamot. Sehän on ihan kuin isänsä :) Toivottavasti siitä myös tulee yhtä mahtava vetäjä, eiköhän.

Today a fine small little boy was born to excellent sled dog parents our Cannon and our Neva. He really looks like his father. Hoping that he’ll also be equally great sled dog :)

Great results from Finnish Siberian Husky speciality show 2017: Kennel Vetoava 3rd, Ealas 1st, Nappi 3rd, Elegia 4th

This weekend we went to the biggest ever Finnish Siberian Husky club’s speciality show: More than 300 Siberian huskies competing in all different classes. We were so happy on the results of our own dogs and the dogs we have bred.

Viikonloppuna oli Suomalaisen Siperianhusky-seuran 50v-juhla erikoisnäyttely. Vetoava-kennelin koirat pärjäsivät tosi hienosti.

Two litters were born 29.1. and 2.2.2017. The dogs are all our current A-TEAM- dogs. The Moonrunners are well-achieved MD and LD-dogs, with nice international race background. Kiri and Beata are our race leaders.

Had a very enjoyable Arctic Husky Hike with the family from Singapore

They came from far away to Arctic Finland. - Everybody got his own husky - and then we went on a husky hike. We had some snow on the ground, so the weather was really wintery already in November.

Then we stopped by a lake, made a fire and cooked some Finnish sausages and enjoyed some tea.

Very international - true memories :)

The 2016 Finnish Sprint Championships in dryland dog sledding were held 15.-16.10.2016 in Jämijärvi, Finland. - Tapio and the Arctic Expedition racing team crossed the goal line as the fastest Siberian Husky team in 8-dog-class. The track was quite soft, but we got quite a nice average speed of 27.1km/h. The dogs did very well and recovered well as the team finished both of the runs in this 2-day-race with about the same time.

Today we took part in our first working sleddog competition with three of our huskies. We shouldn’t have taken all this time before taking part in this, as in this competition our dogs won the best results today.

Finnish working dog competion (REKÄ JOH, REKÄ YLE) is kind of like the American previously held Sepp-test, in which the working capabilities of sled dogs are tested. In the Finnish test the speed doesn’t matter, but various sled dog handling related tasks do: go right, go left, turn around, pass another team, be passed, teams passing each other from opposite directions, run open field, stop, stay calm stopped for 5 minutes. - Maximum of 60 points can be awarded to each individual dog participating in the test. There are two classes, one for leader position dogs (JOH) and one for wheel/team dogs (YLE). The duration of the test is about 20-30 minutes and the jugde is riding on your dog cart/dog sled judging your dogs.

Bingo! Our two dogs Vetoava Cinnamon ‘Sinna’ and her father Icesmile’s Kirima ‘Kiri’ received the best results of this event ie. 58 points out of 60 ! (=YLE1 qualification). They cerntainly behaved well and were truly manageable in front of the dog cart. The judge Eija Hakkarainen told they are magnificent dogs and was especially happy about how they in full turn simply clearly followed the turning lead dog. No worrries at all in passing, getting passed. Nothing to worry about closeby distractions.

Our pre-expectations were also happily met, as our 3rd participating leader dog Vetoava Beata received a nice JOH2 -qualification in her first working dog competition, with 49/60 points in Leader dog class. - Beata is still young and will learn a lot to become even a better leader .

We are really happy of the result, as the track was quite tough today: It zigzagged closeby the stakeout area had many dogs and playing dogs as distractions and happened on a quite narrow path.

Tänään uskaltauduimme ensimmäistä kertaa REKÄ-käyttökokeeseen. - Mielenkiintoisen ja mukavan päivän jälkeen voi sanoa, että erinomaisesti meni meidän koiriemme kanssa, tunnelma oli rento ja saatiin uusia kavereita ja testattua osa koirista tosihommissa: Miten ne osaavat toimia reen edessä? Miten sujuu kääntyminen, toisen valjakon ohittaminen, ohitettavana oleminen, täyskäännös tai 5 minuutin paikallaanolo.

Siistiä! Kaksi koiraamme - nuori vetojuhtamme Vetoava Cinnamon ‘Sinna’ ja isänsä Icesmile’s Kirima ‘Kiri’ - saivat yhdessä kisan parhaan pistemäärän: 58p/60p, jolla sai parhaan arvosanan YLE1. Hienoa. Ei ollut näiden sankareiden kanssa mitään ongelmaa vetohalussa, kääntymisissä tai paikallaanolossa. Tuomari Eija Hakkarainen kiitteli koiria erinomaisiksi vetokoiriksi ja kommentoi kokeen aikana näiden pyöräkoirina tällä kertaa olleiden juhtien hienoa tapaa tehdä täyskäännös: Eivät ollenkaan ottaneet ennakkoa vaan seurasivat johtajaparin perässä.

Vetoava Beata teki JOH-luokassa hyvän suorituksen, saaden JOH2-luokituksen pistemäärällä 49/60. Nuoren Beatan mielestä nuo koiriensa kanssa frisbeetä heittelevät ja palloa potkivat ihmiset olivat kyllä HYVIN mielenkiintoisia :)

Olemme iloisia hyvästä tuloksesta, varsinkin kun enemmän näitä kisoja käyneiden mielestä tämä oli varsin haastava rekikoirien käyttökoe: Mentiin edestakaisin varikon läpi, varrella oli paljon häiriökoiria ja valjakoita. Paikoillaan seisovia koiriakin yritettiin häiritä valjakko-ohituksilla ja palloilevilla frisbee-koirilla :)

Runner of many international long distance races Moon Runs Cannonball strengthens our team

We have a stronger team now, as we received great long-distance dog sledding strength: Moon Runs Cannonball ‘Cannon’ joined our team. He is bred by Kennel Moon Runs, Sweden, and has run succesfully several long distance races in Michael Shelkovin’s team.

Cannon has excellent heritage: His dad is the famous Nathan av Vargevass, the leader, who for example run in single lead Finnmarksløpet 1000 km in 2009. Cannon’s mother is the Moon Run’s leader dog Tanana, whose dad, Sujozov av Vargevass (retired leader) became the best dog of Swedish Speciality show in 2009.

Pitempien matkojen tiimimme vahvistuu, kun Moon Runs Cannonball ‘Cannon’ tuli meille. Cannon on juossut useita keskipitkän ja pitkänmatkan kansavälisiä kisoja. Isänsä Nathan av Vargevass juoksi mm. yksöisjohdossa Finnmarksløpet 1000km vuonna 2009. Äitinsä Tanana on kasvattajakennelin Moonrunsin johtajakoiria. Äidin isä Sujozov av Vargevass, Vargevassin johtajakoira, valittiin vuonna 2009 Ruotsin siperianhuskyjen erikoisnäyttelyn parhaaksi koiraksi.

Kennel Vetoava wins the best Siberian Husky breeder of the show -award - Vetoava Beata wins SERTI

We went to group dog show in Lahti ‘Lahden ryhmänäyttely 2016’. Vetoava Beata, Vetoava Birta, Vetoava Brighid ‘Joiku’ and Vetoava Beena ‘Unna’ participated in the dog show from our kennel.

We got excellent results: Beata got her first certification as the best female Siberian in the show. Kennel Vetoava received also the ‘Best Siberian Husky Breeder of the Show’ - award.

The French having a fun dog sledding day in great snowy conditions

Nice dog sledding conditions are still here. Today we had a great dog sledding ride with a French couple. - Our dogs loved their new friends. We had a nice long ride, partially on frozen lake.

A nice sunny family day of dog sled riding

We had a nice sunny day with perfect weather conditions. - A Finnish family of five visited us to enjoy dog sled riding together. As it was ‘Ski holiday’ here in Finland, all the schools were closed and everybody is doing sports.

We went with many sleds all together at the same time on Arctic Expedition 2 hours - trip. Some of the older children even drove themselves with a couple of our friendly huskies in front :) - And they were good mushers, too.

After the excitement, we came back to the base camp, gave a good drink of water to the dogs - and cooked some sausages by the fire in kota.

A day to remember - a nice ski holiday with huskies.

Lauri becomes 4/12 in Ohkola winter sprint dog sled competition 2016

Now that we have a bit more sled dogs, we participated in Ohkola winter sprint race with two 4-dog teams. Lauri had a great race and passed several other teams, becoming finally number four of all 12 teams who started. Jere won the junior sprint with his 4-team. Congratulations brothers!

Nyt kun meillä on hieman enemmän kisakoiria, osallistuimme talven Ohkolaan kahdella nelosella. Lauri teki SP4:ssa hyvällä tiimillään hienoa jälkeä ohittaen monia ja pääsi maaliin neljäntenä. 12 valjakkoa lähti uralle. Jere voitti oman SP4J-luokkansa. Hienoa! Onnittelut veljeksille!

Rarely have we heard so much laughter and giggling than today when these friendly people went on Arctic Expedition 3 hour - dog sled ride.

Judith, Marijke and Hedy:
” We enjoyed every minute and we are still watching our pictures every day. Thank you so much for this wonderfull experience, it was amazing!!”

The trees were beautiful, pancakes tasted good and we all loved it. The dogs got some extra tasty goodies from a knowledgeable dog behaviorist. (And I think they behaved quite well, too :)

Exciting dog sledding trips continue.

Halfway in our Arctic Expedition 3 hours, we made a nice stop, enjoyed of some good sandwiches and cooked some sausages.

It must be kind of tough for our huskies to be so close to the nice smell of sausages:)

Luckily they’ll all get a nice meal after a hard day’s work.

Exciting exchange: What would you think about a Russian TV-format, in which a girl from Ukraine exchanges places with a girl from Helsinki? They are doing things which their counterparts would be doing - but in a new different culture. Our Russian friend experienced action packed dog sled riding with Arctic Expedition huskies.

Cooking pancakes by fire with the whole family

Off we go to Finland from Germany - to go dog sled riding with Arctic Expedition.

It was kind of cold, but in our Arctic Expedition 3 hours we stopped half way to make a fire and COOK PANCAKES. Yammy - strawberry jam and whipped cream. The fire and the lovely huskies warmed us nicely.

We were able to ride dog sleds on frozen lake, too.

Today we were able to go dog sledding on one of the frozen lakes of beautiful Nuuksio National Park for the first time this year.

Lovely. The dogs (and the visitors) loved it.

Did you know that in Finland there are some ice roads, which you can drive your car on? - Mushing can be done in much more lakes, though :)

The children just love patting our dogs - who also love them. And the same with adults :)

During New Years our huskies welcomed quite a few Russian visitors - many couples - many families. - And the Finnish cold weather didn’t seem to bother the tough Russians. - Or was it the warm husky hugs that made everybody warm?

Dog cart riding in beautiful Nuuksio

When there is not snow - we ride a dog cart: It’s like a cart on wheels. Riding is quite like riding a dog sled. - And the beautiful Kattila area in Nuuksio National Park just looks really nice.

The Häjyt Sprint 2015: Jere wins DS1J and Tapio gets REK3 in DR6

A new dryland dog-sled sprint race ‘Häjyt Sprint’ was held in Lapua, Finland. Usually this Western part of Finland has not very many hills, but there sure were ups and downs in this race:) - Tapio continued taking part in the 6-dog class. There were a couple of World Champions also participating, which promised a tough race. And it was. The dogs did a stable and satifactory run and we became 7th, receiving also our first REK-qualification REK3 in this class :)

Vetoava Aicil ‘Noki’ and Jaakko Pitkänen continued being at the top of the Finnish mushers and dog team: Result: 4th in DR6 with average speed of 30.15 km/h!

Häjyt Sprint - uusi rekikoirasprinttikisa Lapualla - oli nimensä veroinen: Jostain olivat löytäneet kukkuloita Pohjanmaalle ja niitä pitkin mentiin ylös ja alas, ravan roiskutessa. Jännä kisa. Oli sen verran kovia maailmanmestaritason kumppaneita, että sioituksesi Tapiolle ja tasaiselle 6-koiratiimille tuli 7. Hienoa, että saatiin myös REK3-luokitus, nyt ensimmäistä kertaa tässä meille uudehkossa kisaluokassa.

Kuru teki raivokkaan työn hienosti Jeren kanssa ja voitti juniorikisan. Onnea!

Vetoava Aicil ‘Noki’ ja Pitkäsen Jaakko jatkoivat hämmentäviä suorituksiaan Suomen rekikoirailutaivaan nousevana ja jo oikeastaan vakiintuneena tähtenä. Tänään 6-luokassa sijoitus hienosti 4, nopeudella 30.15 km/h.

We continued to get experience with 6-dog class in order to build a better dog team. - Tapio had a good ride with six Arctic Expedition dogs and Jere did fine in the Junior class. The dogs had a stable ride.

Koiravaljakkoajon kärry-SM-kisat pidettiin vuotuiseen tapaan Jämijärvellä. Jatkoimme 6-luokan kisojen käyntiä. Mukavasti meni. Tämä oli nuoren Vetoava Beatan ensimmäinen kisa ja hienosti meni. Koirat juoksivat tasaisen juoksun. Jere teki Kurulla hyvän kisan:)
